Color And Monochrome: Dos And Don’ts Of Using It For Glamour Images

There comes a time when every glamour photographer faces a real dilemma. Contrary to what many photographers think, it is awfully difficult to decide on this matter. This dilemma lies in choosing between color and monochrome photography.

It was simple back when photography only existed in grayscale – nobody would be concerned about the issues of colors, shades and how they match. beauty photographs were all black and white, still being distinguishable and artistic.

It all changed when film started capturing more than mere light and shadows, but also color. At present, digital technologies allow many artists to depict reality in myriads of shades and tones of color – and many of them choose to remain “on the bright side” of beauty art.

That’s why I consider it right to look into the question more thoroughly and reckon the advantages and downsides of both methods. As many things in Artistic Glamour Photography, one’s preferences are a matter of perspective – there isn’t, and there shouldn’t be, any “wrong choices”.

For a start, remember, there is no aspect in which black and white beauty photography can be less difficult than the colorful one, or vice versa. If you think that, for example, shooting in black and white is going to make your photographer’s job easier, think again.

Light always remains a critical issue for both color and monochrome photohraphy. Without the proper lighting the mood will be spoiled and the photograph would be flat. There is no way around it. No matter if you prefer to create colorful photos or position yourself as a conservative fan of black and white, you need to mind the lighting at all times.

There are differences, of course, though they are subjective and mainly concern the impression that viewers will make of your glamourous creation. Some of them are best to learn right away:

  • Color is very useful when it comes to emphasizing some details. A colorful image draws both glances and thoughts to it; it is considerably simpler to compose the elements withing the frame by tones and shades; different shades create different mood and contribute to the impact a photo can have.
  • Black and white puts more stock in texture and forms rather than different tones and shades. Additionally, monochrome reveals the subtlety of light and shadow so that viewers could perceive it directly. Classic black and white helps the artist to create an ethereal, enigmatic and very atmospheric image, this is the beauty of it. Besides, it helps to conceal unnatural colors and shades, so if your model ended up somewhat yellowish on the photo, you can always turn to gray-scale.
  • Different types of monochrome can also help you make an artistic picture. Some glamour artists find sepia a very suitable way to traduce their artistic manner to the viewer. There are many other techniques to try out infrared, hi-key, duotone and others. There are many tutorials on the Web, so nothing really limits your creativity.
  • Colors also can supplement the gray-scale image to emphasize some elements of its composition, it may be a cliche, but why should someone’s superstition forbid you from using it? As long as it works, you can turn to even the most banal approaches, if you can produce something original and unique, it doesn’t matter. Viewers usually notice spots of color on monochromatic background at once, though unoriginal, they may look quite unusual, ergo attractive; black and white elements in the whirlpool of colors and tones work almost the same and may prove useful as well.

You must have realized by now that there is no right or wrong choice on this particular subject, as long as color and gray-scale co-exist, so long glamour photographers will enjoy their holy wars about what is best to use. Actually, why choose? Exploit whatever you feel is best for achieving your artistic goals and, if what you do is working, never hesitate. Creating a masterpiece is never about gear, techniques or style, it is about passion and your unique vision.
