Nikon Coolpix S8100 had been worth the wait!
OK, I was really wanting the PURPLE Nikon S8100 but apparently only black can be acquired unless you buy it directly coming from Nikon. I decided to go black mainly because I live in Oregon where there’s no sales tax, and Nikon was about to tax me and add $10 towards the shipping. Black isn’t all that bad looking anyway and it matches my Cooler Master HAF-X DESKTOP case.
I’m upgrading from a Sony DSC-V1. the type of the Nikon is a curly hair wider, a hair shorter and about 50 % as thick. The DSC-V1 had a po-pup flash in the same area as the S8100 so i used to be used to holding the camera the right way already. For those of you of which can’t think outside the box, the best way hold this camera is to produce gun with your left hand, browse pointing up, then bend your wrist therefore , the gun is pointing to your proper, then place the camera in your gun. The downgrade in the S8000′s 14 megapixel CCD to the particular S8100′s 12 megapixel CMOS sensor will be no downgrade whatsoever. Megapixels are virtually irrelevant to point and shoot cameras , camcorders above 12 anyway, and the photograph quality increase, and low light shooting improvements you receive with the CMOS sensor EASILY trump some sort of 2 megapixel increase. I am left over surprised how good my pictures retain turning out, in all light degrees.
The 10x optical zoom is excellent, but what is amazing is just how clean the digital zoom is beyond that. I am used to fuzzy or blurry shots when utilizing the digital zoom, but this camera somehow gets around that. The placement of the zoom lever forces you to apply your right forefinger instead of your thumb which I’m employed to. It felt kind of odd initially, but makes complete logical sense from an ergonomic viewpoint when you are holding the camera properly. On the opposite side, the macro function floored me. For the point and shoot camera, I by no means expected a macro this good. It macro shoots a lot better than my Cannon DSLR. I can rest the lens facing the object I’m shooting and the image will still focus good.
The LCD screen around the back is a typical 3″ filter, but a very untypically high quality resolution. It has the highest resolution tv screen of any point and shoot possible find. You can really see the detail of what you will be about to shoot with it. It’s bright as well as colors are accurate.
The 1080p video this Coolpix S8100 produces is better than I expected. Far better. You implement the zoom feature while rolling AND ALSO take stills simultaneously. It also information in stereo sound. Great stuff.
a number of people complained that this camera is still somewhat too large for their liking. If ıt had been any smaller that it is at this point, you would not be able to hold on to it without accidentally pressing a mouse or something, and it fits in my pocket the right way. Those people must have toothpick fingers or don’t recognize that size much smaller than the S8100 really isn’t high of an advantage unless you are some sort of top secret spy or something.
The Nikon Coolpix S8100 has many of the basic features you would want, and many that are kind of neat. Manual around the fly brightness, hue, and vividness adjustments could be handy, the skin softening feature spins your subjects into super models, plus the ISO sensitivity range is above normal. It has a wind noise diminishment option while taking video, and many of the features you would use the many are easily and quickly accessible.
i know I’m sounding like a Nikon fanboy now but I’m just so very happy with this camera. The only thing we can think of I don’t care for will be rubber stop that plugs the USB port on the bottom of the camera. I prefer a flip door, but this is simply my preference.
It comes with interestingly good full version photo editing program, and even a panoramic stitching program that I’ve yet give. The full manual is on a CD that includes it though I prefer a book to see. The start-up speed (power on to photo ready) is just under 2 seconds. Holy cow batman!
One feature we haven’t taken advantage of yet but look really useful in action shooting is the high-speed shooting in five full resolution frames at approximately 10 framespersecond, and a preshooting cache that records as long as two shots before the shutterrelease is usually fully pressed. This will really make it quick to get the action shot you desperately want. The other feature that I’m very impressed by is the advanced Night Landscape mode which combines a few five consecutive shots taken at a fast shutter speed right single image with reduced noise when taking hand held shots. Dark backgrounds turn out very visible without over lighting the subject. Very cool technology idea.
