Handing Over Your Car Keys
Knowing when to hand over your car keys is not the kind of decision that people know how to make if they have been up for hours consuming alcoholic beverages or some other sort of illegal substance. Therefore, it is important to alert people of the location of a particular party that you are going to as well as whether or not you think that you will need a ride later on.
Doing so is not only irresponsible and selfish, but it can be incredibly dangerous for you as well as the other people around you should you slip up and manage to get behind the wheel of a vehicle. If you frequent the party circuit, it pays to know what your alcoholic limits are. Bring a friend who doesn’t drink alcohol so that you can be reassured that you will have a sober ride home later on in the evening.
Too often, we hear the tragic stories of others around us who have lost someone to a drunk driving accident. What makes the situations even worse is the fact that most of the time, the person who was driving drunk is the same one who walks away without so much as a scratch on them while the other innocent, unsuspecting person is instantly killed. When I was in the police department, we were forced to watch several graphic videos of drunk driving incidents. While the videos were meant to be instructional for those of us who would go on to graduate the police academy and become police officers, I couldn’t help but think about all of the times in the past when I had heard about one of my friends or acquaintances driving home while intoxicated. Often times, things like this had been brushed off as “not really a big deal” because no one had gotten hurt.
While someone who may have driven home drunk on more than one occasion may not have actually gotten into an accident or hurt anyone, this doesn’t mean that the next time it happens that they will be quite as lucky. In fact, it will only be a mater of time before they get into an accident or are pulled over and arrested by an all too suspicious police officer who is able to determine that the driver is intoxicated. Judging from people’s reactions after they have been arrested for drunk driving, many of them immediately feel remorseful for what they have done, but it usually takes some time to sink in (more than likely as they start to sober up). While they are grateful that they did not hurt anyone or damage any property, they are still shaken up and then begin to think about the consequences such as telling their employer about what happened, having their license taken away, having to perform community service and having the DWI wiped off their record somehow before they ever apply to another job.
