Magnavox MDR513H/F7 HDD and DVD Recorder Product Review
The Magnavox MDR513H/F7 is one of the best value standalone DVR Recorders in the market today. Priced at around $200, this is an easy to setup, easy to use DVR with all the basic functionality you need to record your favorite shows for watching later, and plenty of advanced features, too.
DVRs from companies like Tivo, Comcast, Verizon, and DirectTV require that you subscribe to their service in order to record programs on your DVR. A standalone DVR lets you record from cable or satellite TV if you have it, but you can also record from a digital broadcast signal, and there are no monthly fees. If you already have some form of digital TV coming into your house, you may want a standalone DVR like this inexpensive Magnavox model.
Basic features:
Here’s the deal in a nutshell. This DVR will let you record directly to the hard disk. Programming it for timer recording is pretty easy; you just press timer on the remote and follow the prompts. Playing back is just as easy. Just press play, then you use the controls on the remote to fast forward or rewind to find the exact place you want to start watching. You can also record directly to a DVD, or copy programs that you’ve recorded on the hard disk onto a DVD.
The Magnavox MDR513H/F7 also comes with a built-in digital tuner, so you can connect your antenna or your cable box directly to the DVR, then connect the output of the DVR to your tv. You’ll want to do this to take full advantage of timer programming. This way the DVR can change the channel for you if you’re recording multiple programs from different channels.
Advanced Features:
There are lots of other advanced features, but we’ve been using our Magnavox DVR since Christmas and haven’t used any of them yet. You can record to DVDs. You can start watching a show that’s being broadcast, then 15 minutes in, if you decide you want to record it and watch later, you can record — from the beginning of the program! You can even rewind and replay earlier scenes while watching a live show. For instance, if you’re watching the game and you missed a key play — or just want to watch the play again — you can do that. And then you can continue watching the live broadcast. You never have to miss the action again!
If this seems like magic, it’s not — most of today’s DVRs have a buffer where they automatically record what you’re watching. You just have to be watching through the DVR’s built-in digital tuner instead of using the tuner in your tv.
This works whether you have cable, broadband, or digital tv. You just hook up the unit so that the DVR is between your antenna or cable box and your tv. That way, the incoming signal to your house goes through the DVR, where the DVR can record the signal while you watch.
Bad points:
The only negative thing is that the remote control is poorly laid out and hard to use. But my experience has been that there are only a few buttons on there that I ever use. Once I learned where they are, I was all set.
