Flash Memory Digital Video Camcorder?
Hi, I was checking out the DXG 567V Black Flash Memory Digital Video Camcorder, High-Def 720P, 5MP at Walmart on-line and have a few more questions. My old camcorder was a mini-vhs (15 years-old and no longer works!), so I was able to make videos with sound and then pop them into the vcr to watch. I’m shopping for a new video camera but have become confused with all the new technology. What I would like to do is make videos with sound of birthdays and special occasions, download to my computer and then make a hard copy dvd to snail mail to my mom for her to watch on her dvd player, (she does not have a computer). Will I be able to accomplish that with the above mentioned product?

There are a lot of camcorders around today all offering the ultimate picture quality, sound and whatever.
there are three formats that deserve a mention, HDD (hard drive cameras) media card (SD cards like SONY) or Mini-dv (tape) don’t bother with mini-dvd only good for holding doors open.
the first two both, work as well as each other, the quality is good to very good, media card camcorders are the cheapest at the bottom of the range, up to the same price as the other formats, HDD has a few problems such as vibration (they don’t like it) causes the heads to skip loosing frames, both compress the video from a lower compression to a very high compression, this causes a reduction in the quality. getting the video onto your computer is the same as copying a file so quite quick, but the down side the editing computer need to be high end to cope with the compressed video.
Mini-dv has a prov en track record robust, reliable and when the tape is full you can just pop another on in, cant do that with a HDD camera and media cards are not that cheap. down side the time it takes to capture the video to your computer is real time 5 min’s takes 5 min’s. quality is as good as you are going to get, prices start at the mid 150 upwards.
Hdd cameras if your drive goes down you have lost the video, same with media card, Mini-dv only the bit that is damaged, you can still get the undamaged tape. High def is great but you have something to watch it on is there a point, your descision.
The best way to get the feel for the “new technology” is get your hands on one go into a store and have a look, you will find something to suite your needs
