Digital set top box??? Whats the difference between high definition and standard definition?
I want to buy a digital set top box for the TV in the loungeroom to clear up the picture, but do not know whether to buy high definition or standard definition. What’s the difference? Thank you.
High definition has a higher resolution. What that means is that it shows more pixels across the screen, more detail per inch. standard definition is everything up to 480 lines of horizontal resolution. High definition is up 720 or 1080 lines of resolution. Basically, with twice as much information on screen, the pixels are half the size, making it harder for eyes to see the indivual dots.
If your looking to “clear up the picture”, first make sure that your standard definition set is showing the best picture it can. If the picture appears slightly staticy, kinda like getting bad reception with old rabbit ear antennas, you may be getting a bad signal coming in. If the signal coming in to your house is of poor quality, no TV in the world is going to make it look sharp, high definition or otherwise.
With cable, if you split the signal to multiple TV’s in your house, you lose signal each time it’s split. Sometimes the cable company can boost the signal coming in to your house. If they can’t do that for you, try using a cable amplifier. Stores like radio shack have these. They can be as cheap as 20 or 30 bucks, and will compensate for a low signal. This won’t give you High Definition, but it will ensure that your standard signal is the clearest it can be.
