Mini Dvr Action

My first child has his first birthday tomorrow (Sat Jun 30th) & I need a serviceable but inexpensive camcorder
I thought I could utilize the “movie-taking” capabilities of one of the two digital cameras bought when he was born, but tonight I realized that the results are slow, choppy, and limited to what seems like 30 seconds per clip. I know I’ve seen some JVC and maybe Samsung models at Best Buy, Target, Circuit City, Staples, etc. for what seems like $229 on sale. They are “Mini DVR” or something like that…not “DVD”, and they have 32x to 35x ZOOM. Is this what I need? Low on cash and likely won’t use much, but don’t want to regret no “live action” shots of first B-Day and other development milestones with the lad. Any advice much appreciated.
Wal Mart has one for $199 from JVC, it’s good!
As for SERVICABLE, forget it. Wal-Mart has a 2 year plan get it.
It cost $130 minimum to service a camcorder and your warranty runs out after 90 days.
