iMac Intel built in camera?
On the new iMacs with front row, the little black camera that cannot be hidden. I am seriously thinking about getting one. The only problem is my mom is paranoid about people spying on her without her knowledge, so a camera that is never out of sight really would highten her fears. A webcam is easy to hide. SO what should I do to cover it? I don’t want to ruin the beatuy of the machine by having some ugly sticker right there.
I know all about software+hardware but shes a little behind so it is hard for her to understand / believe me. No way of convincing her that it will not turn on without a program running.
Ok, I’ve said this a million times…. and I’m glad to see that someone else doesn’t like it. The built in camera is a horrible idea, if they are going to have it, it should be optional.
And not just because of paranoia, which is totally valid considering thats a very intrusive thing to have, but also its not positionable.
I mean, most people who have a webcam wouldn’t opt to place it right in their face like that anyway. Its a waste of a camera and its a very “consumer-y” option that doesn’t belong on professional-grade hardware like Apple’s.
I’d suggest complaining to the company, like sending an email or something. Maybe if enough people do it, they’ll omit it on their next release, and that way if you can’t figure out how to cover it, you can always sell it or trade it for the camera free kind if they ever make one.
Yeah, and don’t trust that it is totally safe… not to sound like a paranoid fool but I won’t even connect my iSight to my laptop unless its offline or I am prepared to have anyone see it. And thats even considering the fact that I know Macs are unhackable. But, its not hackers you would have to worry about, its the fact that theres no real reason Apple couldn’t code those cameras to brodcast everytime they’re online.
